Certified Translation Service of Academic Materials

Academic translation is a specialised profession, focusing on scholarly material and educational content. It is an important area of language services with a wide range of linguists working in different academic sectors to ensure accurate and precise translations of important information and ideas.

There are many reasons why an academic translation may be required. For example:

    • Students transferring to a foreign university
    • Studying a Masterโ€™s degree abroad
    • Carrying out doctoral research in another country
    • International academic collaboration
    • Submitting academic manuscripts for international publication
    • Joining an Erasmus program
    • Applying for work abroad
    • Accessing an advanced training course in another country

Whatever the reason for the translation of scholarly texts, the resulting translation should be carried out by individuals with the right qualifications, academic background and extensive knowledge of the type of content.

Espresso Translations has a global team of more than 2,000 translators, many of whom work with academic texts within specific spheres of knowledge. Our linguistic network operates in more than 150 languages and we are ISO 17100:2015 Certified for translation quality assurance.

    What is academic document translation?

Academic document translation is the converting of scholarly texts from their original language into one or more different languages. It could be translating a peer-reviewed article from English to Spanish or an academic transcript from Norwegian to German.

The type of document to be translated can vary hugely and there are innumerable language combinations that can be applied to such translations. It is a vast field and is very different from general translation. Specific protocols must be followed and each academic field has its own terminology. Because of this, only professional translators who are familiar with the subject matter and fluent in both source and target languages should carry out academic translations.

What types of documents can be translated?

The type of academic documents that may need to be translated could include any of the following:

    • University theses
    • Scientific research and studies
    • Diplomas, Bachelor degrees, Masters degrees, certificates
    • Dissertations
    • Course programs
    • Academic books
    • Presentations and projects
    • Curricula
    • Correspondence with foreign universities
    • Lecture notes
    • Research
    • Letters of recommendation

The need to share important academic information and content with a foreign university, colleague or audience means that various documents must be translated into another language.

Espresso Translations provide all your academic translation needs through our accredited translators who deliver professional results every time. We operate in the United Kingdom and across the globe, offering the highest quality translations of academic work and official documents backed up by various certification options.

Who are academic translation services for?

The academic translation provides information to a wider audience beyond the confines of an academy, university or research institute, including the general public.

Academic translation services for University Students

Students may need an official translation of their academic transcript, dissertation or thesis if they are applying to a foreign university for further study. Any such translation must be a true and accurate representation of the original. Any deviation from the source text can mean university applications fail. For this reason, it is important for students to use translation experts who understand the importance of accuracy as well as deadlines.

Academic Translation Services for Researchers and PhD Candidates

Researchers and PhD candidates may require various research papers, academic articles or other materials translated for their own projects and theses. Or they may require their own work to be translated to allow it to be shared through publication or with other academic institutions. Localization is an important aspect of translation of a document for dissemination in another language and culture. This requires adaptation to academic standards in other countries as well as considering cultural context.

    Academic Translation Services for Professors

Academic translation is a significant feature of the work of university professors. Being able to share their ideas with a multilingual audience broadens their exposure in academia and among international colleagues.

Scientific and academic journals publish research papers and articles as well as peer reviews and critiques in many languages. This permits wider dissemination of a professorโ€™s body of work. Professors also create educational material such as textbooks and online courses which can be translated to reach students around the world.

Academic Translation Services for Universities and Research Centres

Large bodies such as universities and research centres often require professional translation services for a variety of services including:

    • material for education
    • administrative paperwork
    • conference presentations
    • grant proposals
    • research funding applications
    • reports & studies
    • surveys & questionnaires
    • course material
    • research papers
    • business proposals

Espresso Translations services provide professional and official translated documents for a range of private, business and academic clients. Scholarly and educational material translation is aimed at university students, researchers, PhD candidates, professors, research fellows,  universities and research centres.

This is just a sample of the type of documentation that large academic and research institutions may need to have translated. Any type of text, either in physical or digital format, that needs to reach an audience in various languages, can be professionally translated.

Are there specific requirements for the translation of an academic document?

Every translation needs to be accurate and precise. However, there are additional considerations when translating academic documents. For example, when translating qualifications, it is important that these are localised to the target language and culture. This means  using the correct terminology and equivalence so that the qualification is recognised.

The translator should also have subject matter knowledge and proven experience in the academic area relevant to the translation. This ensures accurate use of terminology and enhanced credibility.

Adhering to certain formatting is also often required for academic translations including bibliographic styles which must be faithfully reproduced.

Confidentiality is a major concern when translating many types of documents including academic papers. At Espresso Translations, we offer complete data security and are GDPR and Privacy Shield compliant. We also offer non-disclosure agreements for enhanced peace of mind and reassurance.

What is the average cost for academic translation services?

We provide various certification options depending on the needs of the particular translation or client. This are:

Certified translation: this service costs from ยฃ30 plus VAT. The translation is accompanied by a statement of truth which is signed by the translator attesting to the true and accurate nature of the translated material as it relates to the original text. This type of certification is accepted by all official and public authorities in the UK and most common law countries.

Sworn translation: this method of translation costs from ยฃ50 plus VAT. A sworn translator takes your translated document in front of a court or public official and swears to its accuracy. The translation is then accompanied by an affidavit which must be kept attached to the translation in order for it to retain its sworn status. Sworn translations are usually required in civil law countries such as most of continental Europe.

Notarised translation: this type of translated document costs from ยฃ90 plus VAT. The translator takes the finished translation to a notary public along with a valid form of ID. The notary public verifies the translatorโ€™s identity and also signs the translation, attesting to this fact. Their signature does not indicate that they are verifying the accuracy of the translation, just the translatorโ€™s identity.

Apostille translation: also called a legalised translation, this service costs from ยฃ90 plus VAT. The translation is accompanied by an apostille certificate which verifies its legitimate use internationally. This is a way of standardising document authentication among countries who are  part of the Hague Convention.

There are many factors which will contribute to the cost of an academic translation. These include:

    • Length of the text
    • Language pair
    • Complexity of the content
    • Turnaround time requested
    • Formatting required
    • Type of certification needed
