Certified Translation of Dissertations
There are many skills required for successfully and accurately translating dissertations. Even experienced translators need more than to be multilingual. They must also have deep knowledge of the specific academic field and its associated terminology.
Espresso Translationsโ global network of qualified linguists include those who are familiar with a range of academic disciplines and who understand the scholarly conventions of universities and research institutes. They are subject matter experts who are also proficient in the source language and native speakers of the target language.
After translation is complete, the work goes through a multi-layer checking process for readability and quality control. Our thesis translators understand the importance of conveying complex information and concepts in a variety of academic disciplines. This type of specialized translation is one of the many areas that Espresso Translations excel in.
Why is thesis translation important?
Thesis translation projects are undertaken so that they can be presented at an international level or submitted for publication to a wider audience. It may also be necessary when applying for a doctoral or postdoctoral position in another country or for international collaboration.
Whatever the reason, the academic integrity of the content must be retained throughout the translation process. For this, you require a high quality academic translation service with experience and an excellent reputation, like Espresso Translations.ย
With our linguistic expertise, quality assurance and meticulous attention to detail, you can be sure that your dissertation translation is in the best hands.
Who needs a thesis translation?
People who may require a thesis translation include:
- Graduating students who want to do further study in a country with an official language different to their ownย
- Students who wish to publish their dissertation or thesis in international journals

- Graduates who are looking for positions abroad
It may not always be the case that the translation is done as part of an application process for either work or further study. It could be that the research either for a Masterโs degree or PhD is to be published in a language other than the original, for dissemination to a wider audience. For example, a PhD thesis in English will typically reach a wider readership in academia than one in Polish.
What languages are available for dissertation translation?
At Espresso Translations, we work in more than 150 different languages. Some languages are more commonly requested than others, such as English, French, Spanish and German. The table below shows, in general terms, the most requested translations depending on the language:
English | translation of certificates, research papers, and theses in every field |
Spanish | literary translations |
French | legal translations |
German | scientific, pharmaceutical, technical translations |

How do I choose a reliable dissertation translator?
When you choose Espresso Translations, you can be sure that you will receive a high-quality translation of your dissertation or thesis. We have extensive experience translating academic material with linguistic accuracy and a deep knowledge of the subject matter.
You should always use a professional translator who is familiar with the translation process of academic work, as well as the editorial requirements for a thesis or dissertation. Naturally, they will need to be fluent in both the source and target languages. Our translators only ever translate into their mother tongue to ensure that not a single nuance is missed when translating.
Each translator has proficiency in the source language and has more than five years experience in the translation industry.
You should never rely on machine translation for something as complex and important as your dissertation. Nor should you use just any translation service. Itโs important that the translator has a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter so that the translation is precise. This is also important to facilitate an accurate reading of the content in another language.
What is the process for using dissertation translation services?
Our comprehensive academic translation service begins when you contact us via our online form. Simply fill in all the required fields and attach your file. We will contact you within an hour and you will be sent a detailed quote for your project.
From the outset, you will be assigned a dedicated project manager who will be your point of contact for your dissertation translation. The work will be passed to one of our translators who is best qualified to carry out the work. This means they will be a native speaker of the target language, fluent in the source language and a subject matter expert in the specific research field that the dissertation relates to.
When the translator has completed the translation, they will pass it to a second linguist with the same qualifications who will also proofread it. Finally, your project manager will carry out quality control checks and send the completed translation to you for approval.
This rigorous and multilevel checking process is one of the things that sets Espresso Translations apart as a language service provider. The accuracy and excellence of your translation is of paramount importance to us.
What file formats do dissertation translation services accept?
Espresso Translations accepts a variety of file formats and will maintain this format throughout the translation, if this is the requirement of the client. Common formats that we accept are PDF, JPG, PNG and Word. However, as we also utilise Computer Assisted Translation (CAT) tools like Crowdin, Lokalise, Smartling, SmartCat, MemoQ and Trados, we are also able to work with more complex file formats. These include Xliff, XML and JSON.
All of our translation services are carried out by human translators who are supported by CAT tools. We donโt use machine translation other than MTPE which is a systematic editing and review process using software and overseen by a human.
Is it necessary to also provide bibliographic references in the translation?
Yes, it is essential to include bibliographic references in the translation of a dissertation or thesis. These references are a list of the sources for the content and provide the reader with the details of where the research came from. They also include the publication date, authorโs name and any other relevant information and should be formatted exactly as in the dissertation. Any translation should contain everything that is present in the original text.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a simple and a certified translation?
If youโre not sure what the difference is between a simple and certified translation, weโre happy to clear up any misunderstanding. A simple translation is just the converting of the language of the text of a document without any type of certification necessary. However, for most official purposes, you will need to have either a certified or sworn translation.
Certified Translation
A certified translation is accompanied by a statement of truth which is signed by the translator and attests to the accuracy and faithfulness of the translation as a representation of the original document. Certified translations are accepted by most UK authorities for official purposes. In common law countries, such as the UK, Australia and Canada, certified translations are the standard.
Sworn Translation
A sworn translation must be done by a recognised sworn translator. The translation is carried out in the same way as a certified translation but the certification requires the translator to take the finished text to a court or public official and swear to its accuracy and faithfulness. A signed and sealed affidavit is attached to the translation which now has the legal equivalence of the original document. The translation must remain attached to the sworn statement or it will lose its sworn status. Civil law countries such as France, Spain and Italy typically require sworn translations for official purposes.ย
