What is the difference between a simple and a certified translation?

Certified Translation
A certified translation is accompanied by a statement of truth which is signed by the translator and attests to the accuracy and faithfulness of the translation as a representation of the original document. Certified translations are accepted by most UK authorities for official purposes. In common law countries, such as the UK, Australia and Canada, certified translations are the standard.
Sworn Translation
A sworn translation must be done by a recognised sworn translator. The translation is carried out in the same way as a certified translation but the certification requires the translator to take the finished text to a court or public official and swear to its accuracy and faithfulness. A signed and sealed affidavit is attached to the translation which now has the legal equivalence of the original document. The translation must remain attached to the sworn statement or it will lose its sworn status. Civil law countries such as France, Spain and Italy typically require sworn translations for official purposes.
