Certified ID Cards Translation Services accepted by the Home Office and Embassies

In the UK, a certified translation done by a professional translator is accepted by the UK Home Office,  UK Passport Office, Foreign, Commonwealth, & Development Office, UK Border Agency and HM Courts & Tribunals. A certified ID translation is accompanied by a statement of truth from the translator which attests that it is an accurate translation and faithfully represents the source document. This statement is signed and stamped by the translator and contains their contact details as well as the date of the translation.

A notarised translation may be needed for some ID translations. This involves a notary public adding their signature and stamp or seal to the translated document. This notarisation does not add verification to the accuracy or truth of the translated document’s content. Rather it means the notary has confirmed the identity of the translator who has to provide an official form of identification. The notary then witnesses the translator’s signature.

Some embassies particularly for civil law countries such as France, Italy and Spain may request sworn translations for official purposes. Although sworn translations are not required in the UK, Espresso Translations offers these document translation services for situations where they are required. We can also provide an apostille or legalised translation that is recognised as valid by countries which are signatories to the Hague Convention and no further proof is required.

What are ID card translation services?

ID card translation services involve changing the language of an identification card while maintaining the meaning and purpose of the document. The contact information, personal details and often, the format of the ID card must be retained in relation to the original or source document.

Only professional translation companies or certified translators can provide certified translations. While it may be possible for someone trained in linguistics and fluent in the source and target languages to translate the content of an ID document, it will not be accepted by official authorities.

What documents are needed for ID card translation?

Identity documents are often required in support of immigration applications. When people want to move abroad, study overseas or join family members in another country, important documents such as passports, birth certificates and national ID cards often need to be translated.

Identification documents required for the following reasons must be professionally translated:

    • Immigration purposes such as when applying for a visa or residence permit
    • Applying for citizenship
    • Recognition of academic qualifications
    • Marriage abroad
    • Legal procedures such as adoption, inheritance, etc…
    • Registering with a professional organisation

An important point to consider is that the translation of an identity document is only valid for as long as the original document is valid. Therefore, when your passport expires and requires renewal, you will also need to have a fresh translation of this identity document done if needed.

Where can I find ID card translation services?

If you need any form of identification such as an ID card, passport or birth certificate translated into other languages, simply contact Espresso Translations via our website. It’s that easy. We conduct much of our business online so you don’t even need to leave your home to benefit from our certified translation company’s services.

Our global network of qualified and accredited translators can carry out your online translation and send you the final translation along with your certification. This makes the process simple, fast and without the need for bulky paperwork. Your certificate, translation and original files will be returned to you digitally unless you request a hard copy, in which case it will be posted to you for a small fee.

How do I translate an ID?

The translation of identity cards, passports or other forms of ID must be carried out by a professional, certified translator or translation agency to be accepted for official purposes. To get a certified translation, you need to upload your document and send it to us. We will provide you with a free quote within an hour of your request.

Once you accept the quote, a dedicated account manager will be appointed to your project and they will find the most appropriate translator for your project. The translator assigned to your documents will translate them and the complete translation will be sent to a second translator to be proofread. As a final quality control, your project manager will check the translation and forward it to you for approval.

If the translated ID is requested by the UK authorities, a certified translation will be accepted. The translated document will be accompanied by a statement of truth from the translator which verifies that it is a true and accurate representation of the source document. Where the identification papers need to have the same status as the originals, i.e. legal documents, this is something that must be done by one of our sworn translators. A sworn statement will be attached to the translation and the whole thing is considered a single sworn document and must not be separated in order to retain its legal status.

Notarised translations are brought to a notary public who verifies the identity of the translator and also signs the translation. Legalised or apostille translations are accompanied by a certificate which attests that the translated document can be used for official reasons outside the country of translation if the receiving country recognises the apostille.

How much do ID card translation services cost?

A certified translation will cost from £30 plus VAT, a sworn translation costs £50 plus VAT while notarised and apostille translations both cost from £90 plus VAT.

Translation prices will vary according to the type of translation you need e.g. certified, sworn, legalised or notarised.

    Other pricing factors include:

    • Length of the document.
    • Source and target languages. Rare or unusual languages will cost more to translate compared to more common languages.
    • Formatting. If the document needs to be formatted exactly like the original this can cost more as seals, stamps, etc need to be accurately duplicated.
    • Complexity of the ID document e.g. translating a handwritten birth certificate.

Espresso Translations will translate your ID card at an affordable price without compromising quality or attention to detail. As one of the leading official translation companies, we pride ourselves on the high-quality translations we supply while making sure our certified translation pricing is reasonable.

The best way to know exactly how much you will pay for your ID card translation is to request a quote. You can do this by completing the contact page on our website, email your request or call us. The amount of your quote is the price that you will pay. Espresso Translations operates a clear per-word or per-page pricing policy and there are no hidden charges.

How long does it take to translate an ID card?

Espresso Translations offers 48-hour, 24-hour, same day and urgent delivery for all our language services including translating identity documents such as ID cards. If you need a sworn or notarised translation the turnaround time may be slightly longer. This is because the translator needs to make an appointment with a court official or notary public as part of the translation process which can add a day or two depending on the time of year and the official’s availability.

Espresso Translations will translate your ID card at an affordable price without compromising quality or attention to detail. As one of the leading official translation companies, The time to translate identity papers can vary according to the type of document, the kind of translation required and the style of formatting. An ID card with the holder’s name, address, date of birth and nationality included may be quite straightforward. Whereas a handwritten birth certificate that needs to be translated but also converted to a more digitally readable format can take longer.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a notarized translation for my ID card?

A notarized translation of your ID card adds another level of authentication to the document. The notary public checks the identity of the translator and then adds their own signature and seal or stamp to the translation. They also witness the translator’s signature. In the UK, a certified translation is accepted by all government authorities but some foreign countries may require a notarized, sworn or apostille translation. Always ask questions about the type of translation the requesting authority requires before going ahead to avoid costly mistakes.

Can I translate an ID card myself?

There are machine translation programmes which can translate texts but these should not be used for any official purposes particularly for identity documents. At Espresso Translations, your translated ID will be carried out by an accredited professional translator with many years of experience, proofread by a second linguist and then quality control checked by your dedicated account manager. This ensures your translation is accurate, precise and acceptable to the requesting authority.
