Our court certified document translation services in London & UK

Espresso Translations offers a certified legal translation service of all court documents, for civil and criminal proceedings as well as tribunals in London and around the UK. We have a global network of accredited translators who work in more than 200 languages and who only ever translate into their mother tongue.

Each of our professional translators has at least five years of experience in the translation industry and is a subject matter expert. When it comes to legal document translation, this means we provide the necessary experience and expertise in whatever area of law your documents relate to, whether that is civil, criminal, business or family law. Therefore, all of our legal document translations are carried out by the appropriately qualified legal expert.

Any official documents which need to be used in another country may require sworn or apostille translation which are standard services available to all our clients. For international cases in this country, documents such as witness statements may need to be translated for court proceedings, trials or tribunals.

Our court interpreting service also provides translation of the spoken word including all necessary and appropriate context, tone and connotation. The court interpreters will either provide simultaneous or consecutive interpreting. The former is when the interpreter translates in real time, the latter is when the interpreter waits for the speaker to pause.

Translating legal documents, particularly for court proceedings, is a huge responsibility and one that Espresso Translations takes very seriously. We offer the utmost professionalism, confidentiality and discretion when undertaking the translation of these types of documents and are committed to providing an exceptional service to all our clients.

What is translation in criminal proceedings?

Translation for criminal proceedings involves translating any documents that are used in the court case from their source language into a different language. This process must be carried out through expert legal translation services with specialist legal knowledge in the specific area of law involved.ย

Due to the important role that accurately translated documents play in the courtroom, it is necessary that only highly experienced and professional linguists undertake this work. They must also have a high level of experience in legal procedures and understanding of all legal terminology. This ensures that when translated, the documents retain their original meaning and context, vital for any court proceeding.

All of our qualified translators have a minimum of five years of experience in the translation industry and are experts in their particular field. This gives them the knowledge and  expertise to carry out accurate and legally recognised translations which can be presented as evidence in a court case. Entire case files, witness statements and other essential documents can be quickly, accurately and faithfully translated by our network of translators into any language necessary.

How do court certified document translation services work?

Certified translations of court documents are accepted by HM Courts & Tribunals Service as well as most public bodies and government departments in the UK.  When required for international use, a sworn or legalised (apostille) translation may be requested.

For a translation which will be used in the UK courts, the document in question should be scanned and sent to Espresso Translations digitally. As part of the initial process, you will need to tell us what language(s) you want the text translated into, how quickly it is required and what kind of certification is needed, i.e. certified, sworn, etc.

We will send you a free quote for the work and on acceptance, your dedicated account manager will locate the most suitable translator for the project. When your translation is finished, a second linguist with the same language skills as the first, will proofread the document. Finally, your account manager will carry out detailed quality checks before sending the completed translation to you. You will receive 14 days of free amendments, if there is something you need to change.

Why are court translation services important?

Accurate translations of court documents are essential as they are often required as evidence in the form of witness statements, computer records or expert witness reports. Aside from evidence, any paperwork or documents which form part of a court case must be translated precisely and fully in order to maintain the content and context of the original text.

Incorrect or incomplete translations could result in evidence in a court case being rejected or ruled inadmissible and mistakes could have lasting repercussions. This can have serious consequences for the outcome of any legal proceeding and all parties involved.

The certification of any translation must also be completed by a professional translation service for the translated text to be accepted by the court authorities. In common law countries, such as the UK, USA, Canada and Australia, a certified translation is sufficient. However, most civil law countries, including most of the European continent, typically require sworn translations.

What court documents can you translate?

Any kind of document that may need to be presented to a court can be translated. However, all translations must be completed by professional legal translators and accompanied by official certification in order to be accepted by the court.

At Espresso Translations, we translate documents such as:

    • Witness statements
    • Case files
    • Judgements
    • Injunctions
    • Transcriptions
    • Summons
    • Legal agreements
    • Documentary evidence e.g. letters, contracts, identity documents

Of course, this is not an exhaustive list. All pertinent legal paperwork related to a court case or which needs to be presented before a judge and which is in a different language can be translated by our certified translation services.

What are the benefits of hiring court translation services?

The benefits of hiring professional language service providers for court documents and legal interpreting include:

    • Our translators are qualified linguists with legal expertise who understand the importance of the documents, their content and the necessity of accurate translations.ย
    • They are familiar with legalese, a common term for the legal terms used by lawyers, judges and other court officials which the general public or regular translation services may not understand.ย
    • Complete confidentiality. We treat your legal documents and any files used in court with the utmost discretion and security at all stages of the translation process.ย

All of the translations we provide at Espresso Translations are carried out by qualified linguists who have more than five yearsโ€™ experience in the translation industry. Each is a subject matter expert in their own field, only translates into their native language and is fluent in the source language. Our agency is ISO Certified 17100 and we guarantee fast, accurate translations, every time.

How much do court translation services cost?

At Espresso Translations, the cost of certified translations which are accepted by HM Courts & Tribunals start at ยฃ30 plus VAT. If a sworn translation is required, this will cost from ยฃ50 plus VAT. In some instances, a notarised or legalised translation is needed and these cost from ยฃ90 plus VAT.

Apart from these prices, many factors can affect how much it costs to provide professional court document translation services. These include:

    • Length of the document translated. Longer documents cost more due to the amount of work involved and time it takes.ย
    • Language pair. There are more professional translators for common languages such as English, French and Spanish as opposed to rare languages such as Belarusian. The cost of rare languages or language pairs is increased because of the scarcity of qualified translators.ย
    • Complexity. Considering the type of language used, court documents are often verbose and complicated. This means a translator with a high level of legal expertise will be needed to translate the document which increases the cost.ย
    • Certification requirements. Whether you need a certified, sworn, notarised or legalised translation will influence the final price.ย
    • Turnaround time. Depending on how quickly you need your documents translated, you may need to pay for expedited service.ย
    • Delivery. Digital delivery is included in the price that you pay to Espresso Translations, but if you require a hard copy of your documents a small fee is payable for postage.ย

As each project is different, the best way to find out how much your court document translation will cost is to send us a request for quote. The price you are given is the price you will pay and we have hidden extras or fees.

How long does it take to translate court documents?

We offer 48-hour, 24-hour and same day delivery as part of our language services to businesses, legal aid solicitors, law firms and private individuals. Translations often have to be done quickly and for legal services, court cases, tribunals or judicial review, we understand the need for expediency. This is always done with the clientโ€™s needs in mind and with the highest standards of accuracy and precision as our guiding principle.

As with the cost of translations, often the time they take depends on similar factors including length, complexity, language pair and certification requirements. For example, a 20-page transcript translated into a rare language as part of an international court case will take longer than a single piece of correspondence involving a common language pair as part of a civil case.

In all instances, our translators provide court document translation to the highest standard in a fast turnaround time and in more than 200 languages. Get in touch today via our contact form or call us to discuss your translation needs.
