What is clinical trials and research translation?
Clinical trials and research translation involves changing the language of the original study and translating it into one or more different languages. A clinical trial is a period of medical research involving a particular drug, treatment or intervention to test its effectiveness for patients and catalogue any side effects. This is done for new treatments and to compare them to existing drugs and treatments.
Some clinical trials involve hundreds of patients while others can include thousands. This has an impact on the size of the study and the associated paperwork and documentation. There are several stages to any clinical trial often starting with Phase 0 and then moving through various levels up to Phase 4 where a new drug or treatment can be prescribed to patients. Ethics plays an important part in medical research and clinical studies to protect participants, maintain integrity and ensure regulatory compliance.

What phases does the translation of a clinical study include?
There are typically up to five phases of a clinical study involving people and they often start at Phase 1 but some do have an early clinical Phase 0. The documentation which forms part of each phase of the research may be translated if necessary.
- Phase 0: This phase involves testing whether a particular drug or treatment works as researchers expect it to in patients or as it has done in laboratory studies. The study looks at how the drug interacts with the personโs body and how they respond to it.
- Phase 1: Phase 1 of a clinical trial typically only involves a few patients. This is often those who have exhausted all other treatment pathways for their condition with no success. At this stage, the researchers are looking to see if the drug is safe, what side effects it produces, how the drug interacts with the patientโs body and if the treatment is effective. It often involves many blood tests.
- Phase 2: Not all treatments or drugs reach Phase 2 and so there may be no paperwork to translate. However, for those that do reach this stage, there is further testing on a larger group of people to test effectiveness and short term side effects. Dosages and how to manage side effects are included in this stage.
- Phase 3: When a new medication or treatment reaches Phase 3, it is tested against the best available treatments. This helps researchers determine if the new drug is more effective than what is currently considered the best treatment. This stage goes deeper into the side effects and how it affects the patientโs quality of life.
- Phase 4: Once a drug or treatment has been shown to be effective and is licenced, it enters Phase 4. This aims to determine more about the side effects, particularly rare side effects. It also looks at the long term benefits and risks as well as how it works for the wider population.
It is not necessarily the case that every treatment will go through all phases from zero to four but some might. Other medicines may have overlapping phases such as one and two or two and three. Therefore the amount of documentation and paperwork will vary considerably from one study to the next.
What types of documents need translation in clinical research?

Why are accurate translation services important for global clinical trials?
Translating global clinical trials in an accurate and complete way is essential in order to share the results of the research properly and clearly with others in the field. It is also imperative that everyone involved in the research full understands what it entails, particularly the patients.
All medical documents should be subject to the highest quality control and this is particularly important for clinical research. Patient safety could be jeopardised by mistranslation or incorrect localization of the content.
Espresso Translations is more than capable of meeting the challenges of clinical research translation procedures. We are ISO 17100 certified. This means that we meet the International Organization for Standardization requirements for every aspect of the translation process.
How much do accurate clinical trial translation services cost?
Espresso Translations offer competitive pricing on all our language services including clinical trial translations.
- Certified translations cost from ยฃ30 plus VAT and are accepted by all UK public authorities, educational institutions and government departments.
- Sworn translations which must be carried out by a sworn translator cost from ยฃ50 plus VAT. These are typically requested by civil law countries such as those in mainland Europe.
- Notarized translations cost from ยฃ90 plus VAT and are signed and stamped by a notary public to verify the identity of the translator.
- Legalised translations which are accepted by countries which are signatories of the Hague Convention cost from ยฃ90 plus VAT.
There are factors which will influence the final cost of a clinical trial translation, apart from the certification, including:
- Length of the document(s)
- Language combination e.g. rare or unusual language pairs will cost more as there are fewer translators who work in those languages
- Terminology i.e. complex medical language or jargon
- Delivery times e.g. expedited delivery will cost more.

How long does the translation for clinical trial take?
Espresso Translations offers 48-hour, 24-hour and same day turnaround times for most of our language services. However, each translation project is different and there are some elements which affect how long a translation will take such as:
- Length of the text i.e. longer or multiple documents will take longer to translate
- Language pair e.g. uncommon language combinations may be more protracted as there are not as many translators as for more common languages
- Sworn, notarized and legalized translations take longer than certified translations as they require the input of a third party i.e. court official, notary public, etc. with whom your translator will need to make an appointment
- Complexity of the document and its formatting e.g. translating seals and stamps
When you request a quote from us we will also be able to give you an estimated delivery time. We understand the need for expediency but never allow this to compromise the top rate quality of our translations.
