How does our editorial translation process work?

At Espresso Translations, we’ve refined the editorial translation process. We’ve developed a well-structured process for all our translation services, allowing us to offer consistently impeccable end results. That being said, we also have the flexibility to adjust our methods according to your needs and requirements.

In general, however, our process works as follows:

  • The client contacts us regarding their project, most often using our online contact form.
  • A dedicated project manager is assigned to the client. They’ll oversee each stage of the translation making sure everything is up to your specifications. The project manager will be the one to search our global team for the perfect translator for the task.
  • This translator will be a native speaker of the target language and fluent in the source language. They will also be a subject matter expert, well versed in the topic you’ve chosen and have at least five years of experience in the translation industry.
  • When the translator has completed the translation, it’s then proofread by a second translator with the same qualifications in linguistics and subject matter content to help iron out any inconsistencies.
  • The project manager will carry out final quality control checks and editorial revisions if needed.
  • The completed translation is sent to the client for their approval.

We go through this step by step process to ensure that every project is given the same level of attention to detail and expert supervision.

How much do editorial translation services cost?

Depending on the intended destination of the translation, the certification costs are as follows:

  • Certified translation – $40 (VAT may apply)
  • Sworn translation – $70 (VAT may apply)
  • Apostille translation – $120 (VAT may apply)
  • Notarized translation – $120 (VAT may apply)

The cost of editorial translation services, in the U.S., like any other place in the world with a high traffic volume will vary based on few factors mentioned below:

  • Length of translated text: The majority of content would be charged per word or per page
  • Source and target languages: Usually, rare languages and varying combinations will cost more as there are fewer translators capable of working with them and this has a tendency to increase the price
  • Type and complexity of the content: Some content is more complicated than others for a plethora of reasons and will require a more trained eye
  • Type of certification required: Translations can become certified, sworn, apostilled or notarized where each is in need of each of which has a specific cost
  • Formatting requirements: Some translations could be text only while others like images, graphics etc. will also need to be translated and/or localized.

In the U.S., certified translations will generally become accepted by both public and government entities. Academic institutions and private companies will not turn a blind eye from this either as most will honor the officiated documentation.

Civil law countries such as most of mainland Europe typically require a sworn translation done by a registered sworn translator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an editorial translation take?

A couple of factors are taken into account when determining the time it’ll take to finish an editorial translation. These factors include the length of the text, the language pairing, the complexity of the content, along with the formatting required. Certification can also add to the timescale as notarized and sworn translations require the input of a third party, i.e., notary public and court official which can increase the turnaround time depending on their availability.

What role does technology play in literary translation?

While Espresso Translation only uses qualified human translators, they are sometimes supported by some important technology. This includes computer assisted translation (CAT) tools such as translation memory and glossaries. These tools aid with consistency and speed up turnaround times, as well as helping to improve the overall quality of the translation.
