What is a translation of degree certificate?

The translation of your degree certificate means translating the document from its original language into a target language. This is often required when applying for a job abroad or submitting an application to a foreign university. In the UK, a degree certificate from a foreign university must be translated into English or Welsh. An official translation is required in all cases.

Whether you have a degree certificate or a diploma, these documents attest to the completion of study in a certain subject area and to a specific level. As part of a job application abroad or in the UK, you may have to translate your academic achievements and qualifications including degree certificates and diplomas.

Degree certificate translation must be done by an accredited translation company in order to be recognised and accepted by the requesting body.

How can I translate my university degree certificate?

The translation of a degree or diploma certificate must be done by a professional translation company. When choosing a translation service for your personal documents, look for a provider that is ISO-certified or accredited by a translation association. You should also check online reviews to ensure you are choosing the most efficient service.

At Espresso Translations, simply send us clear, legible copies of your certificates and we will get back to you with an affordable translation quote within the hour. When you accept the quote, we will proceed with the service and deliver your certified translations digitally within 48 hours.

How much does a certified university degree translation service cost?

The cost of a certified university degree translation depends on the language pair and the complexity of the terminology and formatting. Prices start at just £30 (+VAT) including free delivery of digital copies. Should you require hard copies, postage charges will be added depending on the location.

If your documents need to be notarized or sworn, prices start at £90 (+VAT). Notarized translations mean that the identity and signature of the translator are confirmed by a notary public and the translation is stamped. Sworn translation is usually requested in countries such as France, Italy and Spain. This involves having the translation certification signed by a public official.

Various countries may ask for an apostille translation which means the translation is legalised. This is then accepted in any country that recognises the apostille.

What are the requirements for degree translation in the UK?

In the UK, you will be required to submit the degree translation together with a translation certification or statement of truth that is signed by the translator stating that it is a “true and accurate translation of the original document”. It must also contain the translator’s or translation office’s contact details.

UK universities will require any academic certificate that is not in English or Welsh to be translated as part of the application process. You may also need to provide a translation of your academic transcript. This is a record of all the subjects and modules that you have studied as well as the corresponding grades, credits and any exemptions. Other translated academic papers or research papers may be requested by some universities.

    Can you translate a degree?

A degree certificate can be translated, however, sometimes it may not be possible to translate the grading system. In instances such as these, we can attach a conversion to the translation so that the foreign entity can get a better idea of the grade awarded. This is usually the case for bachelor’s degree certificates, master’s degree certificates and PhD degree certificates where international grading systems vary greatly.

How can I get an official degree translation to English?

To get an official degree translation into English, just send us a clear and legible scan of your original certificate by email or via our online contact form.  Our experienced translators will then provide you with a certified translation of your degree certificate. You don’t need to send us the physical degree certificate for your translation, a legible, scanned copy is sufficient.

Do I need my translated degree certificate to be notarized?

Most UK universities only require a certified translation of documents without notarization. If you are unsure if your translated degree certificate needs to be notarized, certified or sworn, contact Espresso Translations with your specific requirements and we will be happy to advise you on the level of certification required.

Will I receive a physical copy of my translated degree, or is it digital only?

We will send you a free digital copy of your translated degree. However, you can request a hard copy of the translated document and we will post it to you for a small fee.

Can I update or make changes to my translated degree certificate later?

Generally, you cannot make changes to a translated degree certificate unless you notice a translation error.  A certified translated degree certificate reproduces all the content of the original with the translator signing it to attest that it is a depiction of the original file. If there is an error in the original file, you will need to get this replaced by your university before we can make any changes to the translation.

Is a degree certificate mandatory for WES?

You do not need to provide your degree certificate for WES and should not send original documents as they may be destroyed. WES only require an academic transcript. If this is not in English you will need to have it translated. World Education Services (WES) offers credential evaluation. Its report identifies and details your credentials, verifies that they are genuine and evaluates the authenticity of your documents.

When do you need a degree certificate translation?

You may need a degree certificate translation if you are submitting an application to a foreign university, applying for a job abroad or requesting a student visa. You may also need to have other documents such as education certificates, diplomas or papers translated according to the requirements of the organisation to which you are applying.

Can I translate my own university degree?

You cannot translate your own university degree certificate. For official purposes, including applying to universities, translated documents must be completed by an independent third party. This person or translation agency must be qualified to translate the documents and able to certify their accuracy.

What should I do if I find an error in my translated degree certificate?

If there is an error in your original degree certificate it will be translated as such by the translator. The error will be marked as “sic erat scriptum” meaning “thus was it written”. The translator is not allowed to change any content of the original document, even errors. We are renowned for our great service and high quality, however, mistakes can happen. In the unlikely instance you find an error in the translated document, this will be corrected free of charge.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is a degree certificate in the UK?

A degree certificate is an official, formal confirmation of the successful completion of a degree. It is issued by the university at which you studied. The format and layout can vary widely depending on the awarding institution. During the translation of certificates, we will reproduce the original layout and format while ensuring that the content is accurate at the same time.

Who can certify translation in the UK?

Only a qualified translator or translation company can certify a translation for official purposes. While legally anyone can self-certify a translation, it will not be recognised by governments, educational institutions or official bodies.

What is a certified translation UK?

A certified translation is accompanied by a statement of truth which attests that it is an accurate translation of the original document. It also includes the signature, name and address of the translator.

What is the difference between sworn and certified translation?

While a certified translation features a statement of truth from the translator it does not require a seal from a public body. A sworn translation (often referred to as legal translations) is recognised as having the same legal status as the original and can be considered a legal document. It bears the signature and seal of a sworn translator who is accredited or authorised by a foreign entity. Sworn translations are usually required for the translation of English documents into foreign languages.
