Certified vs Notarized vs Sworn Translation: What USCIS Actually Requires

It is important to understand the difference between certified, notarized, and sworn translation before you format documents for USCIS or any official agency. Many applicants pay for the wrong type of translation because of contradictory information found online, which can delay an application or add unnecessary cost. USCIS Regulation 8 CFR 103.2 and What It Requires for Certified Translation

USCIS applies a single, standardized rule to all foreign-language documents through its legal requirement at 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3). This regulation sets out exactly what a certified translation must contain for immigration applications, and it is the official standard every applicant should follow when filing paperwork.

What is a certified translation?

A certified translation is a complete, word-for-word translation of an official document accompanied by a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy, in which the translator confirms that the translation is complete and accurate and that they are competent and qualified to translate from the source language to the target language.

Does USCIS require a notarized translation?

No. USCIS requires translation and certification, not notarization, so there is no need to notarize the document. The certified translation must include a Certificate of Translation Accuracy completed by the translator.

Can I translate my own documents for USCIS?
